I love these older style books and since I've pretty much read all of Joan Smith's and Barbara Metzger's, I'm trying to find others I might like. This one had some really interesting parts. In particular, I absolutely loved Viscount Kedrington. The premise of the book was simply strange. Our lovely heroine, Antonia, at age 17 was in love with and secretly betrothed to her long time neighbor and friend, Charles Kenyon. But, she must have a Season, her elder brother Anthony said, so off Antonia went to London where she was a huge success. But... when Charles goes up to London to see how she is getting on, apparently she acts a little too exuberant in greeting old staid Charles and he returns her home to the country until her "disgraceful" behavior runs its "nine day wonder" course. Problem is... she never returned to London which resulted in her betrothal to lifelong friend and neighbor, Charles Kenyon, being ended, put on hold, whatever?? for six long years?? In the meantime, brother Anthony has passed, leaving Antonia responsible for the properties and his beautiful young daughter, Isabel, because Isabel's Mama has decided to stay in her bed and do life from there.
In the meantime, Old Charles has been working hard in London to build up his business so he hasn't had time to make one single visit home to see our girl? Yes, he writes, but no visits. Uncle Phillip Kenyon, Charles' father watches over the girls in the role of a godfatherish uncle. When Isabel decides she might as well marry, she and Antonia make plans to go to London accompanied by Isabel's former governess and Antonia's friend, Imogen. Antonia has secret hopes Charles will follow through on their long ago plan to marry, but there will be no pressure whatsoever put on old Charles by Antonia.
Amidst these hopes and expectations, a young gentleman, Viscount Kedrington comes into the neighborhood to spy out Philip Kenyon's property with an eye toward purchasing. He's a great guy, formerly in Wellington's army and someone we immediately are interested in - hoping and praying he will roust old Charles, whom we've not yet met, by the way - totally out of Antonia's mind and heart when they are all back in London together.
There are some fun parts within the pages of this book. One of the best parts is that we don't catch a glimpse of old Charles until about midway through the book. By then, we're all in over Kedrington. But of course it takes Antonia much longer than the rest of us. A good read and a somewhat different storyline - no villains, just a group of youngish people figuring out life. Antonia's younger brother, Carey, returns home from the war toward the end of the book, becoming the catalyst that brings everyone to their rightful places.

A Hero for Antonia edition by Elisabeth Kidd Romance eBooks Reviews
I just wanted to put in a note that I am rather impressed with Ms Kidd's style of writing! This is my first book by E Kidd. The language prose is very believable for the period especially in the wit and sparring.
Will complete this review soon.
“The situations and dialogue are typical Regency fare, but the action is fast and entertaining… Kidd has a light touch with verbal sparring and shows a real feel for the period. Essential for Regency fans.” (Library Journal)
A delightful take with good characterization…” (Haut Ton).
If you like Georgette Heyer, you will enjoy this book. I found it a little slow at the beginning, but once it got going I couldn't put it down.
Nice reading, I enjoy it.
Good character development and enjoyable story. No sexual innuendo or graphic scenes. No abrupt, lazy ending. I don't know why, but several I've read recently have been good reading until the story comes to a sudden end and the author seems to say, "There, I've supplied a solution. We'll have them suddenly see they love each other, kiss, and there's an ending." No tying up loose ends, no further hints of all really being well or of there being anything more to it...like a happy future. Hope this author has more.
I enjoyed this traditional Regency very much, even though I was puzzled by the premise. The h had had her season 6 years before the start of the book but it ended badly when she greeted her secret fiance too enthusiastically. This caused a scandal and she was sent home in shame and hasn't been back to London since. The almost fiance ended things with her after the incident and she has quietly been running her brother's estate for the past 6 years, while the brother is off fighting on the continent. She is finally going back to London for another season where she will be attending to her niece's coming out. In the interim, she meets another interesting character whilst he is staying with her ex's father on a neighbouring estate. They hit it off very well but the h doesn't take him very seriously. The h eventually reconnects with her ex in London and they begin seeing each other again. I'm not going to say anymore as it's worth reading.
